A birth doula is a personal companion who provides emotional, physical support and information to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and after. The role of the doula is to provide emotional and physical support throughout the entire birth process, including guidance in using relaxation techniques, breathing, and natural methods for pain relief. They work to instill a sense of security and comfort for the birthing woman, improve the birth experience, and help her feel involved and capable in decision-making while maintaining a sense of control. A doula does not function as a medical expert but supports a woman's decisions and helps her cope with the birth process in a positive way.
